private drum lessons

As of July 2020 I am no longer taking any regular scheduled students. However, I will be teaching one-off lessons from time to time in Portland and NY. Sign up on my email list to be notified of any upcoming lesson opportunities.

I have been playing drums for 33 years and teaching privately for over 20. I have taught private drum lessons and group workshops at Revival Drum Shop, Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls, and in the Music & Sonic Arts department at Portland Community College. 

I wrote a book on how to play the drums that is available here. I currently drum in the Secret Drum Band, UAU, and Ecology Ensemble. I was in STLS, Hits of Sunshine, DUBAIS band, The Newman/Schonberg/Reyna Group, Kickball and Explode into Colors. I have also played with TJO, Thao with the get down stay down, Jonathan Sielaff, Harry & The Potters, Gabriel Salomon & Peter Broderick, Mirah, Cloud Eye Control, Tune-yards, and the Need.

Lessons are 30 or 60 minutes, and are tailored to the students’ particular interests.  I specialize in teaching beginning to intermediate levels. I am excited to take on new students of all ages from 7 and up. I love teaching older students who have always wanted to learn! It is never too late. 30 minute lessons are suggested for kids 7-8.

You can start to learn even if you don’t have your own kit yet. All you need is a practice pad, or some chairs, unwanted books, or buckets to bang on. There is so much you can work on to develop your coordination before getting a kit.
