In this speculative ecoacoustic composition process, the material of ecological information shapes and informs the resulting music: the inputs of environmental sound are the creative material, as well as the modulators of each other. Site location, placement of microphones and playback elements, as well as focal species and relations, are grounded in ecological&nbsp; observation. The substrate within which the focal insects live is used as a sonic filter, further imprinting the ecological material of the environment on the resulting music. Multiple types of microphones are used, to build an abstracted representation of the sonic range of possibilities of beyond-human sensing. What are we not hearing? Human sounds are included, rather than avoided or edited out, in order to recognize and affirm that we are part of the environments we live in, of nature, rather than independent - and to point to the various impacts and roles of human-made sound (anthrophony) in soundscapes. Can listening to ants generate empathy and encourage us to do our part in countering climate change? Can listening to insects remind us how little we know — and that we are not in charge of nature? Can it shift our perspective and encourage us to consider a biocentric viewpoint? ATTA is a research project on ant bioacoustic communication in collaboration with entomologists Erica Valle and Fabricio Baccaro in Amazonas State, Brazil. I first visited Manaus, Brazil as an artist-in-residence with Labverde in July 2017. On this trip I made preliminary recordings of ant species and their habitats and used these as the basis of several new music compositions. I brought the topic to the attention of myrmecologist Fabricio Baccaro at the Universidade Federal do Amazonas and we have since embarked on a collaborative research project encompassing bioacoustics, field recording, behavioral ecology, taxonomy, music composition, and acoustic ecology. Since 2017 we have been testing out field recording methods and establishing baseline data for a catalog of ant acoustics of the region. We are analyzing temporal and frequency variables across species and subfamilies. I look forward as we continue our collaborative work in ecology and art. ATTA has had invaluable guidance and contributions from Lilian Fraiji, Labverde, primatologist/bioacoustician Tainara Sobroza, sound engineer Anthony Brisson and ornithologist Jeff Podos.&nbsp; ATTA is a multimedia research project on ant acoustics in the Brazilian Amazon producing results in bioacoustic anaylsis, sound works, and music composition. video above + photo at left by Hunter L. I have been developing a series of synthesized “built” soundscapes of hidden sounds - sounds that cannot be heard by humans without the use of technology. Sounds that are easily heard by human ears are excluded.&nbsp;Built Hidden Soundscape: Pipeline Road, Gamboa and Built Hidden Soundscape:&nbsp;Adolfo Ducke Reserve are the first two results from this research. The works each consist of a speculative soundscape of entirely cryptic sound that begins with the dawn soundscape and runs through the diurnal soundscape into the evening. The compositions are presented alongside a spectrogram. A spectrogram is a bioacoustic design tool that shows how sounds sit together in a soundscape. The Y axis represents frequency (Hz) and the X axis represents time. The sound work consists of field recordings from the focal location, compiled from many recordings, arranged temporally, spatially, and spectrally, and bookended by the dawn and dusk soundscapes. This built soundscape includes ultrasonic sounds (above the range of human hearing, played back at lower frequency), substrate-borne vibrations, and otherwise very quiet sounds. you are encouraged to listen in headphones The field recordings that are in the featured video above were recorded between 2017-2019 at Adolfo Ducke Reserve in Amazonas State Brazil as part of the project Amplifying the Tropical Ants.&nbsp;
